On Lamps and Light : How To Hear From God
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me (John 10:27)
It was the 15th day of September 2021.
I had traveled to Lagos for a business trip and was staying at a Friend’s place.
I slept very late the previous night,
But for some strange reason, I was wide awake by 5 am.
I stood up from the bed and sat at my friend’s work table in his room.
I was getting some signals in my spirit and was trying to connect the dots.
After meditating for some minutes the Holy Spirit gave me a tip.
God was trying to talk to me, but I was not in the right posture.
I jumped up and ran to my bag to get my devotional diary and came back to the table.
The moment I sat down and opened my book, God started talking.
I started writing and by the time I was done, I had written down 18 things.
They all had to do about my life, purpose, present, and future.
Every single point hit me hard and there was no doubt that it was God speaking.
It was a new level in my walk with God and for a long time I sat there in wonder.
Now you might have some questions.
How did I get the leading that It was God?
What do I mean by “right posture”?
How was I sure it was God?
I will break all these questions down in this post.
I urge you to calm down, kill any distractions and pay attention.
Your walk with God will not remain the same if you act on these things that I am about to share.
The Three Voices
When it comes to hearing from God.
The need becomes very clear when there is a life decision to be made.
If you only seek to hear from God when you want to make certain life decisions.
Then you are setting yourself up for confusion.
It is cool to get clear directions when you want to get married and want to pick a mate.
Or when you want to be sure that you are making the right career or location switch.
But everything that I have listed above revolves around self.
The things that you believe would be great for your life.
And there is nothing wrong with that.
God wants to help you make those big life decisions.
But you need to help him help you.
God's voice is not the only thing we hear in our spirit man.
Your flesh speaks, and so does the devil.
So how do you know who is who at the times when you need directions?
And from the temptations of Jesus, you know that the devil knows how to quote the scriptures.
If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. Matthew 4:3
Is eating bread a sin, No.
The danger is abusing the power given to Jesus at the counsel of the deceiver.
This is the reason why you have made some decisions in the past that was " not sinful"
And when things go wrong, you wonder why.
Faith Comes By Hearing
One of my earliest introductions to hearing God's voice was Samuel.
In 1st Samuel 3 God spoke to Samuel, calling him with a loud voice.
The first time I read that, I imagined God calling me with a loud voice.
But as I grew in the faith I discovered that it was a sign of Immaturity.
God needed to shout because Samuel was still a child and had no experience with hearing from God.
So no, unless some critical thing happens that makes it necessary.
God won't be shouting your name anytime soon.
He prefers to speak in a calm voice that draws you in.
And unless you have a close walk with him, it will rarely happen.
So If you want to get to that point where you hear God’s voice more often.
Here is the blueprint.
The first stage is your devotional life.
You need to build the habit of studying the Bible.
It helps you know how God talks and what he can say or not say.
So tomorrow, even if the devil quotes the scriptures, you will catch him.
The second stage is the preaching of your Pastor.
You need to belong to a church family because that is how God gifts us with a greater level of insight, among other things.
God himself wants us to receive the right directions from pastors.
And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding. - Jeremiah 3:15
Don't joke with the church.
Also, don't just be a regular member, also serve in the church.
Responsibility in the kingdom grows you faster than anything else.
My spiritual growth accelerated the more I became responsible for systems and people.
Take Off your Sandals for You stand on Holy Ground
Exodus 3:15 narrates Moses’ encounter with God at the burning bush.
God warned Moses not to come any further and to also take off his sandals.
There are protocols that we have to observe in our walk with God.
So you must always ensure that you are keeping the right posture.
When it comes to the topic of hearing God's voice.
The right posture is one that a lot of people have come to neglect.
And that it writing out everything you learn about God.
Both from your devotional and also your church services.
Anytime you are reading your bible/spiritual book or under any form of teaching/preaching.
You need to be writing.
Can you present what your pastor preached last week Sunday if asked?
God is not a talkative, he takes no pleasure in repeating himself when you can do the right thing.
Writing spiritual insights that you get is how you show God that you are serious about His Word.
Remember the story that I shared above?
God did not start talking until I got my diary.
And also, the journey did not start there for me.
I had built the habit of writing down God's word.
That’s why even though I traveled, I still had my devotional dairy with me.
Whenever we come to God's house or do our devotion, He watches and knows the people that are serious about hearing from Him.
You won’t go to school and not write down what the lecturer is saying.
You will be seen as unserious if you don’t take notes during lectures.
Knowing When It Is God
We are a busy generation that has work and goals to crush.
But no matter how busy you are, always make time for God.
The more you fellowship with him, the more you get to know him better
And the more he would want to talk to you.
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me (John 10:27)
Let me give a quick analogy.
If your brother or mother was in another room and called you.
You will instantly know who is calling you.
You won't need to enter the room to know who called your name.
You will know for sure who it was.
This is because you have lived (fellowshipped) with them over time and know their voices.
You don’t need to lay eyes on God to be sure that He is the one speaking.
Achieving Victory
The book of Revelation laid out two things that give us victory as believers.
The Blood of Jesus and the Word of Our Testimonies ( Revelation 12:11)
Here, you see that testimonies are also effective in being victorious.
There are countless testimonies in the word of God, and the church too.
And as you dive deeper, you will get to the point where more and more, you get to hear God's voice.
Don't wait for when you want to pick a wife/husband.
The benefits of hearing God's voice go beyond what you can get.
It also helps you on the journey of purpose that God has created you for.
The best person to guide you in this journey of life is God.
He wants to guide you.
Even in the little things
That’s why we were given the gift of the Holy Spirit.
He is always eager to help you.
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. - Psalm 119:105
Remember those 18 things that God told me that morning.
They have all manifested and I have testimonies for all of them.
Powerful ones.
My prayer is that you see the wisdom in these points and take the right actions.
I love you and I am rooting for you.
God bless You.

Learnt something new today and that is;
The devil does not only mislead with sinful suggestions. He also makes scriptural suggestions that may lead us to walk out of alignment with God.
This was so insightful
I just learned the importance of writing things down, especially during the study of the word of God.
And also, I got the inkling of consecration from this website up. God does not just talk to us when we want Him to. We have to kill "self" if we are to truly hear from Him.
